{Favorite Places} Back Streets in Rome

I'm arriving home late tonight from Hawaii (after an over-night trip for work) and thought I'd leave you with a little bit of Roma.

Rome was not my favorite of the places we've traveled and truthfully overall, probably falls at the bottom of the list of my favorite places in the world.  However, there were things about Rome that I did enjoy and some of those have graced my {Favorite Places} list in the past.

As we prepare in a couple months to return to Italy for the first since our trip to Rome in October 2011, there are things about Rome that I'm hoping I'll still enjoy and find more of in Northern Italy, specifically Milan and Verona when we visit in March.  One of those things that I really liked in Rome were the small, quiet back streets throughout the city.  I found Rome a little obnoxious, motorcycles and vespas flying around all over, constant noise and chaos and I found respite in the quieter little streets beyond the main ones.  The streets paved in cobblestones, buildings hundreds and hundreds of year old, if not older, and the view ahead of colorful buildings, one after the other with shutters falling off and paint chipped.

The charm was in the details, in the falling apart buildings, in the quiet amidst the chaos of the city.  Here is where I fell in love with Italy, in the smaller, quieter areas of Italy's most famous city.

  1. I agree with you about Rome, but the second and third time around were different for me. I enjoyed it on a different level. You will love Verona. I day tripped there from Bologna and wish I had a bit more time. Enjoy!
